Overview
Under general supervision, sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts, instruments and repairs as part of the manual machining process. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Experience in heavy industrial machines highly desired.
Essential Functions
- General Machining Functions
- Calculate dimensions and tolerance using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, machines, and materials onto machines.
- Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
- Machine parts to specifications using manual machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
- Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments.
- Set controls to regulate the manual machining process.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to published guidelines.
- Ability to read and interpret technical layouts, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
- Able to make hand drawings as required.
- Bore, key, and drill set screw holes on gears, hubs, couplings, and fans.
- Machine imperial and metric threads, internal and external.
- Machine and fit tapered shafts and hubs.
- Capability to write and edit simple G-code/M-code programs for retrofitted machines.
- Motor Shop Machining Functions
- Bore and sleeve end brackets.
- Ability to flame spray bearing journals or sleeve bearing journals.
- Mix and apply Belzona/industrial epoxy surface coatings on shafts and finish machine.
- Skim cut equipment frame mounting surfaces including base plates, rabbet fits, etc.
- Machine modifications to equipment frames for items such as bearing temperature sensors, bearing isolator seals (Inpros), and other similar upgrades.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Highly safety conscious for self and others on the team.
- Experienced in the operation of manual, heavy industrial horizontal lathes, manual precision lathes, manual horizontal and manual vertical boring mills.
- Experienced in manual machining of small to large rotating equipment and supporting pieces.
- Significant mechanical knowledge and/or experience.
- Highly motivated with interpersonal skills to effectively work in a collaborative team environment.
- Must be highly experienced with manual machining with minimal supervision.
- CNC experience is a plus, but not a requirement.
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be willing to work overtime and/or be available on call to satisfy emergency customer requests.
- Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment and effective time management in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
- Be self-sufficient, have excellent problem-solving skills, and work efficiently with a high level of accuracy.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on shop equipment.
- Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
- Troubleshoot and repair shop machinery.
- Write and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Complete daily maintenance and repair logs.
- Communicate with operators from other shifts.
- Maintain and secure work tools.
- Clean and maintain work area.
- Turn off and lock out equipment when not in use.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
- Min 5yrs experience required.
